5 or 6 (3 on 1) interviews with faculty/chief residents. Great program overview.

Chair was nice to me, but spotted past at Emory and WashU. Other retina faculty member was rude (his way of finding out if you want to be there). Others pleasant. ~6 (1 on 1's)
- Program Advantages:
If you're a DO/FMG, they have a track record of taking 1 or 2 applicants/year.
- Program Disadvantages:
Wasn't a good fit for me and most of the PGY2/3's didn't seem happy. I left the interview pretty disappointed.

Good program introduction. ~6 interviews (most 2 on 1) and all asked many negative questions (talk about weaknesses/mistakes you made/difficult situation/criticized my step score). Not a way to make a positive impression!
- Program Advantages:
Happy residents. Good technology. Chair was very nice. Overall, faculty seemed nice.
- Program Disadvantages:
Overshadowed by JHU/Maryland. Poor surgery numbers, clinics not busy enough?? Baltimore.

Match Experience
Step 1 is important, but can be overcome. Apply broadly, and you might get lucky! I didn't think there was a geographic bias with where I got my interviews. Aways: Not as important as other fields. I didn't do aways at the higher tier programs I got interviews at. **Contact programs for interviews: I didn't do it, but I hear it works. Thank you emails aren't a big deal, saying to a school that they're one of your top programs means nothing except that they are not your #1, which might even hurt. Saying they're you're #1 will likely help if you do it right after your interview (don't lie and say this to multiple programs though). Thank you letters will get there after they've already ranked you and they likely won't reconvene just to adjust your ranking based on a letter.
