Interview Experiences Three one-on-one interviews, one with Dr. Day, one with a faculty member, and one with a current resident. Resident interview, and 2 faculty interviews. One was the Chair, Susan Day. All pleasant relaxed interviews Beautiful campus, 3 interviews 1 vs 1. One with chair and rest with faculty. They were very nice. 3 interviews: 1 with resident, 1 with Dr. Day, one with attending. Then a bus tour of the Oakland hospital and a bit of SF. Four 1-1 interviews, very laid back interviews, standard questions 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17
Program Advantages Dr. Day is well-known in the Ophthalmology world. Good mix of county and private practice. Great volume (close to 200-250 phacos), location, seems like excellent clinical experience High surgical volume Good surgical volume 150-200, Location. Staggered start is awesome, residents were so friendly, program gets you tons of surgical experience, maybe some of the best I saw (any case that comes into Oakland is yours, so you'll do the corneal transplants, etc). 4 MONTHS of electives to customize y Unique staggered start, relatively good fellowship match, great feel, San Francisco high surgical numbers, staggered start is unique and wonderful, no competition with co-residents 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17
Program Disadvantages The commute to Highland is not convenient. staggered start (2/3 of matched residents will have to spend an extra year to wait for the fellowship application season), most are volunteer faculty, there are few CPMC faculty No affiliated university Staggered start 2 of the residents may start as late as 9 months behind first resident. Mostly voluntary faculty. This program is amazing. None I can think of, except if you're looking for a research-heavy program. Unique staggered start, lots of driving, cost of living, very long hours at county hospital, Chairman/program director on her way out (uncertain about her future involvement, she seems like a tremendous resident advocate and is well known) UCSF is nearby, small name 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 17
