California Colorado U Colorado: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Presentation from PD. 3 3or4 on 1 interviews, very laid-back. short tour. | - Program Advantages:
| Beautiful eye center, mid-expansion and will be completed 2014? Will see huge volume here, good balance of autonomy and supervision (4 hospitals - VA, county, Univ, Childrens). Solid subspecialties and surg #s. DENVER. | - Program Disadvantages:
| Growing reputation, but not quite there yet. Very busy call - primary x2 years. County hospital is a little bit of a drive from the others. Very little ancillary staff at VA. |
|
Connecticut Yale University: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Short presentation, followed by 7 1-2 on 1 interviews and a tour | - Program Advantages:
| Great VA experience, Bahamas rotation, location takes advantage of the Yale undergrad community | - Program Disadvantages:
| Small program, some subspecialties only had 1-2 faculty. No simulator, no county hospital (but a clinic) |
|
District of Columbia Florida U Florida - Gainesville: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Short presentation followed by 8ish 1on1 interviews. Very laid back. Walking tour. | - Program Advantages:
| Huge surgical numbers, including refractive experience (80-100). | - Program Disadvantages:
| Too much autonomy at the VA? No county. Small faculty (1-2/subspecialty). |
| U Miami / Bascom Palmer: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Short presentation followed by hanging out in a conference room and sneaking out whenever you had an interview. 1 on 1 interviews, all very laid back | - Program Advantages:
| fantastic reputation with strong subspecialties. Opportunities to particpate in community service clinics. Eye ER leads to continuity clinic patients. | - Program Disadvantages:
| Intense atmosphere. Very busy especially first year. Lots of Spanish speaking. Miami's culture may not be for everyone. |
|
Georgia Emory University: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Presentation early in the morning, then several (7?) 2 or 3 on 1 panel interviews, followed by a van tour. | - Program Advantages:
| Great pathology, large faculty strong in all subspecialties | - Program Disadvantages:
| busy call - 2 years primary. The county hospital is a bit of a drive and the residents are extremely busy there (work till 7pm). During my interview they discouraged my research interest. |
|
Illinois Iowa Maryland Massachusetts | | Massachusetts Michigan U Michigan: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Grand rounds followed by presentation, then broken into 2 groups. 1 interviews (all 1on1), the other group van tour of Ann Arbor. | - Program Advantages:
| Research rotation, beautiful 7-story eye facility. All sites very close together. Less frequent call. Good technicians. Residents happy and very normal. Ann Arbor is nothing spectacular, but is very nice. | - Program Disadvantages:

|
Minnesota Mayo Clinic: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Presentation followed by a walking tour (fast!!) and then 8ish 1on1 interviews, not intimidating. | - Program Advantages:

Match Experience Matched at my #1 choice!!! To dispel some myths: I did not have a big wig letter (although it can't hurt) and my research was primarily basic science, PhD-based (and mostly unpublished at time of application), however I still got offers at some outstanding programs, and matched at a top program. Screening by geographic location was definitely more of a factor than I realized. Not coming from the East Coast, I had an impossible time breaking into East Coast programs for interviews. I didn't try emailing, but heard that often works. I think there's a lot to be said about being a well-rounded person, and many programs appreciate that. Interview slots go QUICKLY, if you can be on a rotation where you can check your phone constantly it will be to your advantage. Otherwise, just relax! Programs are just looking for people who will succeed with them.
