Attended grand rounds in the morning, included presentations by Dr. Girkin (chair) and Dr. Mason (retina) about the surgical volume and research opportunities in between grand rounds talks. Interviews were 3 panels of 4 faculty that lasted 15 minutes
- Program Advantages:
Strong retina program with amazing faculty and lots of research. Ridiculously high surgical volume (10k surgeries last year). 200+ cataracts. Private practice feel with clinic. Protected 5 week research block optional.
- Program Disadvantages:
Birmingham is decent. Looks a little old but there are definitely things to do. Surprised this program isn't ranked.

Began at 830 and finished at 6, with a reception until 7. Laid back interviews with 4 faculty (including PD and one of interviews being 2v1). Two more 2v1 interviews with PGY-2s.
- Program Advantages:
Good surgical volume (150-200) for NY. Faculty are friendly, resident-focused. Residents were happy. Lots of research opportunities (clinical > bench). Surgery experience during first year. Lots of investment into ophtho from Mt Sinai currently.
- Program Disadvantages:
Subsidized housing is still rather expensive. Have to commute between to VA and to Elmhurst (but shuttle transport provided).

Started the day at 10 am, with interviews ending around 4-5 p.m. Grand rounds occurred afterwards, followed by the resident dinner. Interview with 3/6 people on the ADCOM.
- Program Advantages:
High, and diverse, surgical volume (300 cataracts). Requires 3 projects/year with time during 1st/3rd year protected for research. 2 VAs. Stable faculty. Q6 home call. Amazing fellowship match. Excellent for academia. Residents were happy.
- Program Disadvantages:
Weak on trauma surgeries (due to location). Small wetlab. Felt some faculty were very serious/intense compared to other programs. Durham is a decent enough city.

Day started at 7 am with thorough introduction by the program director. Then had 5 1-on-1 interviews with the Chair, PD, and 3 other faculty. Day finished around 3 pm after the tour.
- Program Advantages:
High surgical volume (250+ cataracts) with more than enough glaucoma surgeries, vitrectomies, lasers. Residents are happy. Very team-oriented atmosphere. Amazing fellowship match, lots of research opportunities. Huge wetlab and VA.
- Program Disadvantages:
Residents are very happy although they seem to work VERY hard. This is an amazing program.

5 minute introduction by PD, followed by tours for my group. Then 3 2-1 panel interviews. Finished by 1 pm (after lunch)
- Program Advantages:
Ridiculously high surgical volume (250-300 cataracts). Begin minor OR procedures during first year. Very strong retina program. 1/2 of residents usually apply for fellowship.
- Program Disadvantages:
Small program with a small number of faculty. Small clinic areas but they do pack a lot within that area.
