Arizona
  U Arizona:

- Attended interview
- Interview Experience:
5 interviews. Nice people. No tour was kinda weird. Interview lunch was the best of the trail, took us to some fancy restaurant.
- Program Advantages:
Good location in warm weather. Nice faculty. Moonlighting supposedly doubles your salary here during the R3 and 4 year. Trauma 1 could be a good thing or bad thing i guess.
- Program Disadvantages:
Program was in flux for a few years but seems to have recovered nicely. Call sounds brutal here but im sure you learn alot

Well organized. Three interviews with faculty one with resident. Took us to lunch by the beach. Pretty good selling point
- Program Advantages:
Location is awesome. Nice weather and a few minutes from the beach. Has the Mayo name attached to it which probably gets people confused into thinking its Mayo Roch
- Program Disadvantages:
Small class size, which they say is intentional, but makes call much more frequent. Smaller department overall, not sure about the volume that this place sees.

Four interviews, three faculty one resident. Pretty standard
- Program Advantages:
In chicago. I think this place is trauma 1 which could be a good thing. No real fellows so lots of hands on, especially IR
- Program Disadvantages:
Small size makes call frequent. All the residents were one race, which shouldnt matter but it was kinda weird.

Four interviews, two with faculty. Supposedly one of the faculty asked tough questions to the other applicants but not to me. PD was nice. Residents and faculty seemed to bad mouth their own facilities a little too much. Didnt leave the interview wanti
- Program Advantages:
New $500 million hospital in 2012 which looks really nice.
- Program Disadvantages:
Probably the most outdated facilities that I saw of all the programs that I visited. PACS were all on tube TVs. Supposedly they bought new pacs equipment but hadnt installed it? Maybe by 2012. lol. Small class size , scan US on call, rough schedule
  St Francis Hosp of Evanston:

- Interview Experience:
Nice day. Had a group interview which Im not really a fan of, but they were all really nice. Noon lecture was in a closet sized rooom with like twenty people.
- Program Advantages:
They are a 'show' site for phillips CT or seimens or something. Means that they have nice equipment in some regards.
- Program Disadvantages:
Small size makes call frequent. Not sure how much volume is seen in evanston.
  U Chicago:

- Matched here (Ranked # 2)

Interviewed with three faculty and one resident.Facilities were really nice.State of the art equipment, 256 slice CT, etc.Coolest residents on the trail.Noon conference room was sweet. Lots of flat screens and nice seating. Chair took the time to chat w/
- Program Advantages:
Great name. I felt it was the best program in Chicago. Faculty has a strong pedigree. Some dude who invented PACS is there. Chair is on the Board of Directors of RSNA. The best call schedule in the country= more time to study on your own which is huge f
- Program Disadvantages:
Not sure about moonlighting opportunites here(should change with addition of Northshore). They are also building a new $700 million hospital to be completed 2012? with 7 new IR suites with MR fluoroscopy. not a negative, I just ran out of room above.
  U Illinois COM at Chicago:

- Interview Experience:
8 speed dating interviews. Nice people, laid back interviews. Good lunch. Nice facilities. MRI research center is pretty amazing.
- Program Advantages:
Their neuro department and IR are strong. Good location. Good size program. Strongest MRI in the world for human studies is here (9.4T) Good research opportunities.
- Program Disadvantages:
Class size shrunk by one due to loss of the VA. No good moonlighting that I am aware of. People bash this place on the internet, but its largely undeserved. Would be happy to train here. PD can give a weird first impression but seems like a nice enoug

Iowa
  U Iowa Hosps:
- Applied
- Attended interview
- Interview Experience:
Four interviews. All really nice. One attending was really cool, another was kinda weird. Nice facilites.
- Program Advantages:
Good rep, really strong neuro dept. Residents seemed happy. Fun place to live. I used to have freinds that went undergrad there and it was always fun to visit, but that was in college.
- Program Disadvantages:
College town, could be a plus or minus. Parking seemed to be a problem, but nothing worth getting excited about. Overall was a strong program. Absolutely no moonlighting opportunites available at all.

- Program Advantages:
Have the nicest facilities I saw other than Mayo Roch. Had like a 30 foot screen for noon conference. Lots of cool technology here. Ranked this place #4
- Program Disadvantages:
Baltimore is supposedly a tough area. I didnt see anything wrong with this place, but I only was around the really nice parts of downtown. Lives in the shadow of Hopkins i guess. Residents were nerds.

Moonlighting was built into the curriculum. High volume with lots of crazy stuff. Have like 20 mris and cts or something. Large clas size and great reputation. Seemed like the residents werent responsible for pushing volume which could be a plus or mi
- Program Disadvantages:
Im a single male. felt like going to Roch would be like joining the church in terms on my personal life. Even still I had this place at number one on my list until the day before rank lists were due.

Standard day. Nice facilities in a cool city. Was cold as sh*t though.
- Program Advantages:
Good solid program with good faculty and happy residents. Nice location and good sized class means call isnt as often. You get a B+H during your TY year free off charge.
- Program Disadvantages:
Categorical Program with a TY year that sounds like it would make you want to kill yourself. One of the residents said that he though of quitting medicine all together during that year. Some interviewees were weirded out by the PD, but I didnt notice an

Standard day. Two or three faculty interviews. Residents seemed pretty cool. PD was kinda scary during the interview, but really nice otherwise. Dont know if she was messing with me or not. Nice facilities in a huge city.
- Program Advantages:
Large class, lots of hospitals to rotate through. Supposedly one resident bought a porsche with all the moonlighting money he made. MD anderson seems pretty amazing and offers a ton of opportunities to see some rare stuff.
- Program Disadvantages:
Too many hospitals to rotate at for me. Felt like there would be a disconnect between the residents because of this.
  U Texas Southwestern:
- Applied

- Interview Experience:
Great facilities. Nice interviews. One interviewer was kinda wierd but not to bad. Tour guides showed us where Kennedy died.
- Program Advantages:
Nice volume. Great reputation. Dallas was an awesome city. Moonlighting was great especially neuro. Call schedule seemed pretty reasonable. Residents seemed really happy. I ranked this place #1.
- Program Disadvantages:
They seem to take mainly people from Texas and Louisiana which makes it rough as someone applying from out of the region.

Washington

  Virginia Mason Med Ctr:

Three interviews, laid back, nice facilities. Was told program is faculty driven so residents arent responsible for pushing crazy volume.
- Program Advantages:
Seattle is an awesome city. Weather is strangely mild all year round which is perfect for me. Faculty has a pretty strong pedigree and they like to teach. Faculty driven program means residents arent responsible for pushingn volume. Good relations wit
- Program Disadvantages:
Small size wasnt ideal for me. Residents here were alright. Not sure about volume here.

Match Experience
Regional bias is real, I got interviews at every place i applied to in my region, hit or miss outside of it. Numbers will get you a chance to break out if you want. I didnt email or call programs begging for interviews and I didnt send a Number 1 email to my top program cuz I was torn between Mayo, UofC, and UTSW up until the last second. Got waitlisted at Baylor, Emory, Colorado, Maryland, and only got off of Marylands waitlist. I would recommend being more proactive than I was if you want to get more interviews outside of yout own region. I wasnt because I was happy with the interviews that I got. Only got one ranked to match email and that was from Mayo Roch. I also had to cancel a few interviews at some strong programs (loyola, NW, case) due to scheduling conflicts or lack of interest on my part and I missed one due to flight cancellations (brown). Definitely recommend flying DIRECT, especially in January. I would rank chicago programs in this order: 1. UofC and NW. Edge to UofC. UofC has a stronger faculty in terms of pedigree and a stronger rep overall in medicine, which will help if you want to leave the region later. NW has a way better location and their IR program is crazy good/best in the country. Doesnt look like many of their residents actually go into IR fellowships though, 8 IR fellows there surely has that impact. Facilities at both places are awesome, with the edge going to NW. Research goes to UofC hands down. UofC took affiliation of Northshore in Evanston from Northwestern which was northwesterns major/only moonlighting experience, so moonlighting goes to UofC. 3-4. Loyola and UIC with the edge to Loyola in terms of rep. I would rather be at UIC though cuz Loyola supposedly works you like a slave. Research is way stronger at UIC, not even close. 5. Rush. Ive read alot of people claiming that this place is considered equal to UIC and Loyola or even better, but after visiting, it became obvious that this is simply not true. Some say their new hospital will catapult it into the leagues of NW and UofC, but the program is just too small and I got such a negative impression of this place when I visited. Plus NW's facilities will still be nicer even with Rush's new hospital and UofC is building a even bigger/nicer hospital than Rush is, so I think this place will at best be third behind NW and UofC. This was the only university program I thought of leaving off of my rank list.
