- Interview Experience:
Large group of fellow applicants like 30-40. Interview day seemed a bit impersonal as you can imagine when there are 30 other applicants.
- Program Advantages:
Very nice new facilities. Denver is a great city close to many fantastic outdoor opportunities.
- Program Disadvantages:
Residents seemed displeased with the program and program director. Having interview on Saturday seemed like they were trying to hide something. Training seemed average to mediocre.

- Interview Experience:
Hopkins is a great name brand and you will hear about this during your interview day. Interviews, except for one guy, are generally relaxed with getting to know you type questions. They did try to sell Baltimore.
- Program Advantages:
World class faculty/hospital with amazing residents and education. Research opportunities are as good as they get in most all areas of radiology. All doors will be open to you when done training here. Residents happy.
- Program Disadvantages:
You'll hear this again and again about Hopkins but its greatest disadvantage is most likely its location. Baltimore looked fine to me but there is a crime problem. Residents downplay this and emphasize the nicer residential areas they commute from.

- Interview Experience:
The interviewers here are perhaps slightly less personable than other places I visited. It was a little less touchy/feely but certainly not stressful. Most of the residents were friendly. I had the feeling I could be very happy here.
- Program Advantages:
MGH is the real deal. Their research is one of their greatest strengths. Molecular imaging here is really strong. I like the structure of their program with a mini-fellowship. Call here seemed to be totally reasonable.
- Program Disadvantages:
Boston is really expensive. I'm not sure how well I could get used to the daily grind of the long commute I'd need in order to find somewhat affordable housing. If you're single and don't mind high rent this would be a great place to train.

Michigan
  U Michigan:

- Attended interview
- Interview Experience:
Great group of friendly, personable, and down to earth residents. The dinner the night before demonstrated just how happy the residents were. The interview day is really relaxed. I got a great gut feeling about this place.
- Program Advantages:
Very collegial, relaxed environment with an awesome education. Research opportunities are also quite extensive. Residents were intelligent and very happy with the program and Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor is really cool college town with great school spirit.
- Program Disadvantages:
Ann Arbor can be small for some. The winter is cold, gray, and long. Otherwise Michigan is a fantastic place that I would be very comfortable with.

Minnesota
  Mayo (Rochester):
- Applied
- Attended interview
- Interview Experience:
Relaxed atmosphere. Interviews mostly about getting to know you. Residents are all very happy with their experience at Mayo.
- Program Advantages:
This place is all about education. They have extensive teaching files and really value your educational experience. The volume here is very high and you will certainly see a diverse set of pathology. Teaching seems to be great.
- Program Disadvantages:
Although I'm all about cheap living and having a nice house Rochester is a bit isolated. Nice restaurants are scarce and Mayo really is the best thing happening in Rochester. Also, if you're not used to winter weather be advised this place is cold!
  U Minnesota:

- Attended interview
- Interview Experience:
I didn't get the sense of real enthusiasm for the program on interview day. Faculty and residents were friendly but something just seemed odd on my interview day.
- Program Advantages:
I really do think the training here would be solid. They cover a large county hospital, the university hospital, and the VA meaning you would get a diverse patient population. I think you'd receive very strong clinical training here.
- Program Disadvantages:
There was a bit of a shake up in the faculty a few years ago. I think it is more stable now. Research may be weaker here. I don't like the fact you have to do your transitional year at their county hospital.

New Hampshire
  Dartmouth-Hitchcock Med Ctr:

- Interview Experience:
Friendly residents and faculty. Area is beautiful. Very nice hospital. Seemed like a city.
- Program Advantages:
Small close knit program. You get to know the faculty very well. Area can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on your interests. Teaching seemed good.
- Program Disadvantages:
The program size means call will be more frequent. The size of the area was a little small for my taste and I tend to like smaller areas. Your education might suffer due to lack of volume.

North Carolina

- Matched here (Ranked # 1)
- Interview Experience:
This place just felt right for me. Every interview I had here was phenomenal. Your interviewers really put you at ease. They seemed very energetic and happy. Residents were intelligent, humble, and professional.
- Program Advantages:
Like many of the top programs Duke is strong in almost every section. The education is fantastic. Helms of Brant and Helms heads the MSK section. Faculty are personable. Residents are on a first name basis with most faculty. Residents were very happy
- Program Disadvantages:
Durham will be a disadvantage for some. The weather can be hot in the summer. The IR section is perhaps the weakest section. Otherwise, this place offers an amazing education without a lot of big city hassles.

- Interview Experience:
This is an easy going place and this will be reflected during your interview day. People are super friendly and easy to get along with.
- Program Advantages:
Great program director who is very responsive to residents. This place is chill and relaxed. If you're looking for a decent education in a beautiful city/hospital location and a collegial atmosphere this may be the place.
- Program Disadvantages:
You could possibly slide through this residency without being pushed too hard. Small class size could be a disadvantage meaning you might take a bit more call.

- Interview Experience:
This place is kind of old school. Some of the people who interviewed me were quite ancient. UTSW definitely felt like a conservative place. This isn't necessarily a bad thing just different from what I'm used to. Interviews are generally relaxed.
- Program Advantages:
Great clinical experience here. The residents seemed to be reasonably happy. Research is quite strong but it is not emphasized. Faculty really enjoy teaching.
- Program Disadvantages:
Call can be rough. Other services sound malignant. Not sure if this influences the radiology residents. Dallas is not for everyone.

Utah

Virginia
  U Virginia:
- Applied
- Attended interview
- Interview Experience:
Pretty relaxed. This was my first interview. The PD is kind of odd and asked some weird questions. That said he is nice.
- Program Advantages:
There are some big names here. Brant of Brant and Helms is here. The PD is also a huge proponent of education. C'Ville is a cool place in a very scenic area. Residents are intelligent and happy. Really cool neuro reading room. Great benefits.
- Program Disadvantages:
Residents stress how hard they work here. Call seems absolutely brutal. C'Ville is somewhat isolated. Overall, though a great place with few disadvantages.

Washington
  U Washington:
- Applied
- Attended interview
- Interview Experience:
This place also has a lot of interviews. There were eight 15 min interviews. All of the interviews are pretty chill.
- Program Advantages:
You will receive amazing clinical training here. This is as rigorous as it gets in radiology. Harborview will be a hardcore trauma experience. Research here is also quite strong in most areas. Seattle is one of the most scenic cities in the world.
- Program Disadvantages:
Residents were less than enthusiastic about their experience at UW. Teaching may not be as strong here. UW takes more of a learn by doing approach. You are spread out mainly at three different hospitals. Conferences are broadcast so you don't see your

Wisconsin
  U Wisconsin:

- Attended interview
- Interview Experience:
You have a lot of interviews here. I think around six. This makes for a kind of whirlwind experience. The PD asks some interesting questions that might throw you off. I think this was my worst interview of the season.
- Program Advantages:
This program is great! Residents are extremely happy with the program. I thought the residents were cool people who you could definitely see yourself hanging out with. Education here is very strong. The PD is very nice and in tune with the residents.
- Program Disadvantages:
Although this place doesn't quite have the reputation MIR has it's really coming up in my opinion. I think this would be a great place to train. Again this place has a cold, long, winter and could be a shock to someone not used to snow.

Match Experience
Rejected by CCF, UAB, Iowa, UPenn, Vanderbilt, UNC, Northwestern, UCSF, Brown, and BWH. Waitlisted at MIR, IU, and Wake Forest. Silent rejection from UChicago and Stanford. This really is an interesting process. I garnered some great interviews and got my fair share of rejections from great places too. At the end of the day regional bias does play some part. So, don't spend too much time trying to rationalize why you got an interview at place X but got rejected at place Y. Programs vary in what they are looking for in an applicant just as our opinions vary in what we want in a program. There are many great programs. In general I believe in tiers of programs. Within the top tier there really wasn't a huge difference in quality of education, research, and prestige. Location and personal preference will play the largest part in determining which place fits you and perhaps your significant other best. Do I have regrets about the application/interview process? Sure, I wish I'd interviewed at couple places (UCLA for example) and not a couple of others (Minnesota and Colorado). However, interviews will come at different times of the year and changing your schedule once you have plane tickets, hotels, and rental cars can be a pain. Try to generate the picture of the perfect place for you going into the interview season and concentrate your efforts here. However, don't be too narrow minded on location or you might miss out on great programs. Hopefully this helps future radiology applicants. Good luck!
