Interview Experiences
pleasant
meet with residents, 5-6 interviews, tour of dept, session with chair, lunch/noon conf
nice program
Interview day well planned Friendly interviewers/residents Round-table Q and A session with Chairman
same as LIJ except hospital is nicer.
Smooth interview day. Only surprise was being pulled out from conference room for interview (had not been previously told when interviews would start, was making coffee when interviewer showed up). Pizza lunch at noon conference.
No dinner the night before. PD is well known and Hopkins trained.

Program Advantages
best community program in NY, great hospital, new affiliation with Hofstra Medical School, great location, great teaching, very well known in NY, case in point is published from NS
Great location Great fellowships after graduation
big enough to have an academic atmosphere. New medical school (Hoffstra) opening next year.
Very strong academic center. Residents very happy. North Shore shares a program director with LIJ and will likely eventually merge and become a large, strong, two-hospital program. Many residents commute from city.
Lots of pathology and volume. Nothing really special about it tho (In fact I asked the PD what made it unique and he dodged the question). I think people are happy just to be near NYC.
Reputation-wise within the greater NYC area, it's up there right behind the big academic centers.

Program Disadvantages
none that I could think of
more suburban area but close to manhattan
Rotate through LIJ for peds but have full privileges there. My only problem is that I am unsure how the eventual merger will shake down, although shared PD will likely make things smooth.
Didn't leave this program ever wanting to come back.
Some residents live in NYC and claim the commute is 'not bad,' but I didn't want to be that far from the city.
