Applications
Alabama
  U Alabama - Birmingham:
- Rotated at this institution
- Applied
- Attended interview
- Interview Experience:
Very short, you get 10-15 minutes with the interview panel and about 7 hours of sitting in a room watching a 15 minute video about Birmingham. I can't imagine how they evaluate students who did not do a rotation there.
- Program Advantages:
Great surgery, great town, great (but dated) eye hospital, faculty are all friendly and approachable. Good to great reputation in the south especially
- Program Disadvantages:
In house call q5 first year. However, the upper levels all seem very supportive and willing to come in at the first sign of a problem.

- Program Advantages:
Honestly the friendliest residents I met anywhere. Faculty seems really supportive, residents are very happy, great clinical experience, surgical numbers well above average. Very busy and diverse pathology
- Program Disadvantages:
Very busy and diverse pathology, can be a pretty hectic call

Indiana
  Indiana University:
- Rotated at this institution
- Applied
- Attended interview
- Interview Experience:
All morning interview on Saturday: intro followed by long pause, interviews followed by long pause, tour followed by long pause, lunch
- Program Advantages:
Good number of residents (6), lots of different hospitals all withing walking distance or shuttle ride, building new stand alone eye institute. New chairman is great.
- Program Disadvantages:
I spoke with a few residents who wish they would have ranked differently, surgical numbers could be better, some residents have had trouble matching into fellowships lately

Kentucky
  U Kentucky:
- Applied
- Attended interview
- Interview Experience:
Dinner the night before, small group of applicants sit in a conference room and are periodically called out to interview.
- Program Advantages:
Surgical numbers are great, call can be pretty low key, Lexington is beautiful and affordable, resident feels like they are getting great training
- Program Disadvantages:
There is one guy (and you will know who I am talking about when you go there). He is overtly rude and arrogant to applicants, asking them questions that he admits have no right answer, questioning their responses, making condescending faces/sounds throug
  U Louisville:

Morning interviews, applicants in lobby with some residents, periodically called back for interviews, then a perfectly adequate lunch of sandwiches, followed by a tour of (I'm totally serious here) all the physicians lounges on campus. They didn't show u
- Program Advantages:
Seems to be a solid program, perhaps even on the rise. There were a number of interviewers who seemed great, very nice, very approachable, very interested in me and my application. Residents seemed nice
- Program Disadvantages:
Nothing really stands out as bad, but nothing blew me away as great either. Not all of the residents were available on the interview day, which may mean nothing and could be a scheduling thing, but it always makes you wonder. I got the impression that m

- Program Advantages:
Great peds experience, nice eye center that keeps you away from the hospital, call seemed reasonable with WashU down the street
- Program Disadvantages:
Secluded in the eye center, travel for cataracts (it may be done away with by now). You get the feeling everyone was telling you all day why they didn't feel like they were competing with WashU.

Morning interview with a 'mixer' the night before. You either interview before lunch and tour after, or vice versa.
- Program Advantages:
Good reputation, protected research time, research powerhouse, good enough surgery and clinical experience, great facilities. They don't hesitate to tell you that tons of chairmen train here. Most of the faculty members and residents were very nice.
- Program Disadvantages:
During one interview I mentioned that I felt that they provide very good clinical/surgiacl training, to which the interviewer responded 'I wouldn't say that, in research we are very strong, but clinically we are just ok.' There is also a very strong 'th

- Program Advantages:
Great clinical setup where you have a continuity clinic EVERY AFTERNOON. You work up to a full patient load by the end of your training and you get to work with top notch support staff and even get a secretary. They basically train to be a private doc r
- Program Disadvantages:
Kinda small (3), you have to travel about 45 daily for about 1/5 of each year. Some people won't like the city (I love it).

Ohio
  U Cincinnati:
- Applied
- Attended interview
- Interview Experience:
It snowed that day and it was a mess, people came late, some people just didnt show up. It was unfortunate because it made the place look disorganized. There was also a worthless tour of a facility on the other side of town that took a while to get to.
- Program Advantages:
Good exposure to private-type elective surgeries like lasik.
- Program Disadvantages:
Nothing really special here, the program just didn't stand out in any way. Long drive to some sites (all within cinci though). Residents made it seem like you have to be somewhat pushy to get good surgical exposure. Most of the residents seemed nice, ex

- Program Advantages:
Great reputation, huge surgery numbers, at the time the chairman was very well connected in the eye community, but he has since moved into a permanent position with the academy. All the faculty love to be in OKC, they really take care of the residents an
- Program Disadvantages:
Chairman just left (maybe not a problem at all). Some people just won't mesh well with the city. Maybe not a ton of hospitals thus limiting diversity of exposure? Otherwise I had a hard time finding problems and ranked them very highly (I kind of wish I

South Carolina
  Med U South Carolina:

Dinner/mixer the night before, great breakfast with intro in library overlooking downtown Charleston. Broken into 2 groups: interviewing or touring building.
- Program Advantages:
Good surgery, good clinical, beautiful facilities, beautiful city. Faculty is super friendly and they have a good reputation
- Program Disadvantages:
I had heard a ton about how good this program is before I went. When I got there I was somewhat underwhelmed. I don't think there are any major problems, but there is a ton of hype that is mostly just due to the amazing location. If you go, you should

Mixer in eye building followed by the best dinner on the trail. Breakfast followed by sample morning rounds presentation. Interviews with groups or individual faculty including dedicated research interview.
- Program Advantages:
Great city, goodish reputation, brand new eye institute building, tons of research space available with a plan to expanded the department's research. New chairman seems to have a huge vision and is a good cheerleader for the program.
- Program Disadvantages:
The people here seem to have an inflated opinion of themselves and of the program. They talk about being a top 10 department, but there is almost nothing that backs that up except for a nice new eye building. Otherwise the surgery is average, the clinic

- Program Advantages:
Amazing campus, largest program in the country, TONS of money, all the cutting edge equipment you could ask for, program director seems to be a huge advocate for residents, chairman is very well networked at the hospital,
- Program Disadvantages:
Autonomy might not be for everyone, they are very sink or swim here which they say makes the residents exceedingly useful within a few months. I have heard (but obviously nothing official) that they are very fellow-centric here. During my interview we w
