Match Experience I came from a solid medical school, but one without any sort of national reputation. I did well in medical school, but ranked outside the upper quartile of my class. My Step scores were sub-par, I assume, in relation to many other applicants. I do know that I got 4 strong letters; many of my interviewers commented them. I think this was one of the main keys to my success. I did 2 aways in addition to my home rotation. One of those places did not interview me, but I did get a great letter out of the deal. My stategy was to get letters from people who really knew me and worked closely with me. Ended up with 3 ENT and 1 pulmonary/critical care.
I just want to emphasize that if your numbers are on the fence like mine were, just go for it! I'm living proof that normal people with normal scores, etc. can match into this competitive field.
