California Georgia Emory U: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Great, enthusiastic residents. Bus tour to grady and crawford long hospital with gorgeous new laryngology offices. 'who would play you in a movie?' . . . good question. | - Program Advantages:
| Great for voice, department seems to have a lot of power. Intern year seems relatively easy, actually, after resident feedback. Nice balance in patient population between emory/grady. | - Program Disadvantages:
| 3 residents/year, so all home call between hospitals that aren't particularly close. Would like more research time, but that's me. |

Iowa Maryland Johns Hopkins U: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Matched here (Ranked # 1) - Interview Experience:
| Shorter day with 6 interviews (two reisdents, two faculty, Dr. Francis/Dr.Minor). Very relaxed. One of the few programs where faculty knew you well before you arrived. | - Program Advantages:
| Probably the best for otology, research experience. Wonderful, accomplished, diverse group of residents. Newly redesigned didactics. Terrific leadership. | - Program Disadvantages:
| Maybe voice, but I'm sure this will improve soon. I loved everything about this program. |

Massachusetts Michigan U Michigan: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Short day with a lot of downtime. Total of 5 interviews (4 as two on one). Much of the day spent hanging out with residents in a conference room, which was actually really fun. Evening event was a blast. Dr. Bradford went out with us. | - Program Advantages:
| Most well-rounded program I found. Deep in all specialties, great otology (Kresge) and head and neck research. Great new chair. Ann Arbor seems terrific. | - Program Disadvantages:
| Somewhat homogenous patient population. I suppose its colder than what I'm used to. Not many disadvantages to this place. |
|
Missouri WUStL/B-JH/SLCH Cnsrt: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Non-stressful, 8 interviews total. 2 of the interviews were 2 on 1. Residents made a good effort to be completely open about programs strengths/weaknesses. | - Program Advantages:
| Well-rounded, strong in head and neck and otology. Great night float call system. Very strong research opportunities. | - Program Disadvantages:
| Surprised to hear paper charts still used in the hospital, though this should change soon hopefully. |
|
North Carolina U N. Carolina Hosps: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Many interviews (~12) each about 20 minutes. about 3 interviews were with PhD faculty and one interview with both Dr. Pillsbury and Dr. Drake. Not particularly stressful, just busy. | - Program Advantages:
| Immense auditory research and opportunities to pursue research. Devoted chair, new skull base program, location. Great otology, pediatrics volume. | - Program Disadvantages:
| Perhaps too much research pressure if that's not your thing. |

| | North Carolina Ohio Ohio St U Hosp: | | | - Applied - Received interview
| U Hosp/U Cincinnati COM: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Half-day interview, with about 6 two on one interviews. It was the end of the season, tour was truncated, but the interviews were fine. The pairs make things interesting. | - Program Advantages:
| Clearly peds is dominant (6 fellows!). This is the home of airway reconstruction. Residents all seem content with their training. Decent research opportunities. Well-balanced. Really nice facilities. | - Program Disadvantages:
| Residents say otherwise, but I'm not sure how all that peds influences your training. They say its advantage and might be right. While not fair to the program, the city is a disadvantage to me. |

Oregon Pennsylvania Thomas Jefferson U: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Again, I can't say it was stressful. The program coordinator does a fantastic job making you feel at home. | - Program Advantages:
| You operate, a ton, like all the time. If it requires 10,000 hours to become an expert in anything, this program will make you an expert surgeon. The residents do get along very well. The program is developing at a blistering pace with 5 faculty in 2 y | - Program Disadvantages:
| Little diversity among the residents and attendings. In house call all 5 years. I'm not sure I share Dr. Keen's philosophy on clinic time. I think it's essential to learn 'when' in addition to 'how' to operate during residency. |
| U Pennsylvania: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Day split into two groups, half in AM, half PM, with tour in the other half. Dr. O'Malley asks you about other programs (strengths/weaknesses), but I think it's just curiosity about competition. | - Program Advantages:
| Well-balanced, great head and neck. Unique robotics research. Strong research for a 5 year-only program. The 'home' of endoscopic sinus surgery. | - Program Disadvantages:
| While robotics is often touted, you probably won't have much exposure as a resident. Resident clinic seems to the residents like more of a hassle than useful learning. |
| U Pittsburgh Med Ctr: | | | - Rotated at this institution - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| Wonderful job selling the program and the city. 12 15-minute interviews, longest day I went on. Great evening event. | - Program Advantages:
| Clearly strong in skull base and head and neck. Overall, balanced program with good depth. Major research strength is head and neck. Great leadership. | - Program Disadvantages:
| One attending in facial plastics, mostly rhinoplasty. No free flaps (advantage or disadvanatage is yours to decide). |
|
South Carolina Tennessee Virginia U Virginia: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| I had two mildly confrontational interviews, one from the program director and another from one of the more experienced faculty who seemed like he was trying to assess my political lean. Residents were really great. I loved hanging out with them. | - Program Advantages:
| Charlottesville seems like a great place to live. Residents get a good facial plastics experience, otology as well. | - Program Disadvantages:
| Limited Peds. Not much research (res student does flap checks). PD surprised me by suggesting you couldn't be a successful oto-researcher coming from the program. I don't believe this. Maybe he thought I'd be unhappy without more research? |
|
Washington U Washington: | | | - Applied - Attended interview - Interview Experience:
| one on one interviews (about 8) with 2 PhD interviews. None of them stressful. Program director asks a few tricky questions, always the same though apparently. | - Program Advantages:
| All residents do at least 1 year of research, one does 2. High volume with good surgical experiences. Massive catch zone for referrals. All the research connections one could want. Seattle is a huge plus. | - Program Disadvantages:
| 3 residents seems low for the volume, but this is changing apparently soon. Just a great program. |
