Match Experience
My scores were around ~240. Step II>Step I. The match rate for ophthalmology is ~70-75%. I interviewed at solid mid/mid-upper level programs. If you are a weaker applicant based on scores, make up for your app by being unique or going above and beyond with research, volunteering, and hobbies. If you do that you will blow everybody else out of the water on interview day. NEVER underestimate yourself- an interview is an interview even if it is off a wait-list. I matched at my favorite program (technically #2 due to proximity to my significant other but we've worked it out so it couldn't be better). Strong, nationally recognized program with large balanced surgical numbers and advanced research. I have NO DOUBT that my letters helped me get my foot in the door initially. Bust your ass in front of famous ophthalmologists to show you care; don't be annoying and egotistical, however. My co residents are probably all leagues smarter than me so I hope that my work ethic and manual dexterity help me shine these next 4 years.
